Southwark Community Producers

Development of a community-led digital interpretation programme supporting large-scale archaeological work in Southwark, London. Commissioned by Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) in partnership with Southwark Works, Thames Reach and Transport for London.

Our team supported MOLA to pilot a creative method for building local engagement with land reuse and urban renewal. The programme empowered participants to develop the digital creative skills to creatively respond to the live archaeological site at Liberty of Southwark Cultural Quarter, and to build their sense of connection with the changing site.

Lead producer: John Coburn

Contributing artists: Ben Holden, Tim Shaw

Working with newly-excavated artefacts- from Roman board games to layers of Victorian wallpaper- participants created artworks connecting their own experiences with the diverse communities who lived and worked in this area of London over 2000 years.

The programme supported MOLA to develop its approaches to community-led digital interpretation of live archaeological sites. Participants also reported significant skills development and employment outcomes and on improved sense of connection to Southwark- a place they have always called home, or have recently arrived at from another country.
